At Milk and Honey Mamas, we believe the arts are a valuable and even essential method of connecting with God. This is because the arts can transcend language (or, in the case of poetry, transform language), bringing a different and deeper interaction with the divine. In the Book of Mormon, Nephi taught that God “speaketh unto men according to their language, unto their understanding” (2 Nephi 31:3), and I (Caroline) interpret this to mean that God uses all types of language–including the language of music and art–to speak to His children. What is He saying through these languages? I think it is in our best interest to find out.
If you’ve been following us for a while, you know we try to include artwork, music, and poetry with each of our posts. We will mostly keep to that framework this year, but once a month we will also be diving into an artist from our church’s history. As we listen to God’s revealed words in the Doctrine and Covenants, I think it is worth exploring His revealed glory through the hymns, poetry, and paintings that were inspired by this moment in God’s work.
God calls out in all languages—his creation sings with His work in all forms, flowing out in beauty and abundance. I like to think of the artists as other “translators” who are called to transmit the beauty and abundance of God into a message we can all receive.
